Get The Glue...

I'm not sure what has come over me (I blame Pinterest), but I've been in a super crafty mood lately. I know that this too shall pass, but for now, I'm having fun with it. On the other hand, Peter's probably getting tired of coming home and hearing me say, "Look at what I made today!" when I'm quite sure he'd rather I say, "Look at what I cleaned and/or filed away today!" For some reason, crafty little projects are more fun than dealing with dust bunnies and paperwork, but that's a whole different post, so let's move on to the fun stuff, shall we?

A few weeks ago I saw the pin of this craft and I thought it was stinkin' cute...

Looking at it again, I wish I had noticed that there was a space between the letters, but that's okay - it just means that mine is a little different than the original. Anyway, I did a bit of research as to where I could get Scrabble letters (without breaking up my actual game of Scrabble) and I discovered that you can order replacement letters from Hasbro for $6.50 via mail order. You've never seen someone so excited to receive cheap wooden letters in the post before!

Once they arrived, I gathered together what I thought I would need for this craft and - being in a blog frame of mind - I took a photo of it to show you...

What isn't pictured in this photo is the background paper I had to use, as well as the thin cardboard that replaced the real back of the frame after the Scrabble letters were too thick to use with the original backing. Fortunately, I purchased the frame at Ikea and the hanging tab easily slipped off of the original and crimped on to the replacement cardboard for a no-hassle swap.

I tried out various background colors and finally settled on a dark grey (I seriously should have looked at the original project again, because I picked grey thinking I was all original, only to discover it was the same color Crafter #1 used - must have been subliminally in my head). I used Tacky Glue to adhere the letters to the paper and then set two heavy books on top to hold them in place while the glue dried. Here's the final result...

For the record, you can only make one of these with a bag of Scrabble letters because there is only one "V" in the bunch (and maybe one "Y", but I can't remember now). The only option would be to use some of the blank tiles and figure out how to put a "V" or a "Y" on them that doesn't look totally homemade. Since I have little faith in my ability to do that, I now have a bag of excess Scrabble letters hanging about, but (thanks to Pinterest) I think these coasters might be the answer. Aren't they adorable? Except I would need mine to actually spell real words, because they would annoy me otherwise. I'll keep you posted...

  1. I buy old/partial Scrabble games at thrift stores to use around the house (decor and learning combined!), but those coasters are seriously tempting...

I love how the you and love form the shape of a cross. Because of His love, He died for you...just awesome!

Can't wait to see what you do next...you can show Peter the dust bunny pile and filed papers later! :)

  2. Hmm, it could be quite difficult spelling real words in all directions on those coasters! Like the art project though, there's no reason why you can't make more with different sayings!

  3. This is so adorable. I love it. You just inspired me. Thanks. Great blog post. Totally loved the cross in the frame blending with the words. = )

  4. Thanks Beth!

Jamie - I thought of looking for old games at yard sales, but I decided it was just easier to order direct. However, I think Target runs some specials on games (including Scrabble) around Christmas when you could probably pick it up for $2-3 new. I'm going to keep my eyes open for that this year.

Emily - I thought about that, but thought I would at least try to spell real words in one direction. This is for sure another future project!

Irish - Thanks much, but I can't take the credit for this one. Pinterest is a wonderful place for finding projects! :-)
