Soup, Deadlines, and Giveaway #3

Moment of honesty here: sometimes this whole giveaway thing puzzles me. I, who am a sucker for free things, would sign up for every single contest. However, while the first giveaway was fairly popular, this week was pretty quiet. I was on Facebook and mentioned the lack of entries, which is when a friend informed me that she didn't comment because she doesn't like the texture of soup. You learn something new everyday...

And now for some general housekeeping business...

This may seem obvious, but if you win, please get back to me with a mailing address within a week of winning. It's not that I don't want you to have the gift, I just don't want to still be sitting here in December with four boxes ready to be mailed and no addresses. To keep that from happening, I've created a deadline for each contest. If I don't hear from the winner by the date shown, then I'll be selecting and announcing a new winner - thanks for understanding!

Giveaway #1: (Since I just came up with this rule, you get a grace period) 10/26
Giveaway #2: I need to hear from you by 10/26
Giveaway #3: I need to hear from you by 11/2
Giveaway #4: I need to hear from you by 11/9

*   *   *   *   *

So, now that we've discussed why people don't eat soup and the fact that in order for you to receive the prize package, I need a mailing address, I'm moving on to the fun part: Announcing Winner #2!! This time I used the Husband Random Generator (meaning that Peter, without looking at the comments, said, "Pick #7"), so comment #7, you have Peter to thank for randomly selecting you...

Congratulations Erika! You have won what I think is one of the best cookbooks (for soup) that I have come across. I hope you will enjoy it, but more importantly, use it! I make one simple request: please come back and comment in the future about your favorite recipe from the book because I would love to hear some feedback! In the meantime, I need an address of where to send your new cookbook, so you'll be getting an email from me shortly.

Ready for Giveaway #3?? It starts...NOW!

Up for grabs this week is something very close to my heart. At the end of a long day, there's nothing I enjoy more than a warm pot of tea to help me relax and unwind. While sticking a tea bag in a mug and popping it in the microwave does work, there's just something about pouring tea from an actual tea pot that makes me go "Ahhhh..."

Photobucket

With that in mind, I've put together a basket of tea goodies, including a fun little tea pot, a box of my favorite tea (Rooibos: thanks to our stint in Botswana), a simple red mug, and a little book of tea-related recipes (Taking Tea at the Savoy). It will arrive at your doorstep packaged in an adorable lined basket, ready to be unpacked and used {just add water}.

My question for you this week is a little bit different, and it has absolutely nothing to do with tea, but I'm curious about the people who read this blog. To be entered to win:

*  *  *  Leave a comment telling me about your favorite childhood BOOK or MOVIE. *  *  *

Listen up though, because if you're on Facebook, then you have a second opportunity to win! In the beginning I said that Busy Nothings didn't have a Facebook page. Well, as you can see in the sidebar, now it does. If you "LIKE" Busy Nothings on Facebook and come back and leave a second comment here, then you will get two entries. Easy peasy.

Contest ends on Wednesday night, October 26th, and the winner will be announced on Thursday, October 27th and will have one week to respond. I can't wait to read your comments on this one!

  1. I think my favorite childhood book was really a series: Little House on the Prairie. It was the series of books that developed my love of reading. I loved the show too.

  2. My favorite movie was the Parent Trap (original version). I enjoyed Hailey Mills and thought the cinematography was creative to make twins when it was only 1 gals. Also I thought they were fun, creative kids. Also tea time is fun and am currently planning a Christmas outreach called Candy Cane Christmas Tea. But don't worry you don't have to send it here if I win. :-)

  3. I'm going for double or nothing. :-) My favorite childhood book is hard to say, I think it would have to be one of my Bible story books that my parents read to me. I always love to hear stories about Jesus.

  4. We LOVED reading as children, I think book/movie combo would be Anne of Green Gables. We read those books and watched the miniseries over and over again.

AND welcome to facebook, I gave you a big thumbs up!

  5. Hmm. Favorite childhood book had to be Goonies. That movie was fantastic. Actually, it's still pretty good. ;)

Favorite book...I read the Little Women series a few times. Anne Frank was another favorite. And when I was younger, anything Disney. Which sadly now it seems nearly impossible to find the full length Disney books. They are all these strange abbreviated versions or sequels.

  6. I did not have or have access to a large library when I was a child. My grandparents gave me a subscription to Moody Press for a birthday or Christmas. Every month I'd get a new book and they were great books. I think my favorite was George Mueller: Young Rebel in Bristol. I loved the fact that he was not a cherub sort; I loved that he helped children; I loved his incredible faith in God.

I guess I was an older "child" (maybe 13) by that time... when I was younger I got a copy of Mrs Piggle-Wiggle at a flea market and I loved that book. :)

  7. I'm always amazed by what people go for in a giveaway. Sometimes the ones I think will only do so-so end up being the biggest! ;)
This is a really cute package you put together!
This is my second entry to celebrate your FB existence ;)

  8. I'm so excited!!! Not only was I mentioned in a blog post (albeit anonymously - hmmmph) but I was able to open your eyes to the complexity of the issues soup can bring up. ;) LOL! And I've already been liking you on fb, so tell Peter to pick me. :) I will be back w/ my favourite book as soon as I get my mind in the proper "literature appreciation place."

  9. Hmm... favorite (early) childhood book - it was a little Golden Book called "The Party Pig." My Dad and I had a tradition of always reading it together on my birthday (a tradition which lasted until about age 19!). :o) As an older kid, I liked the American Girl books, Boxcar Children, Nancy Drew, and Grimm's Fairy Tales (to name a few).

My favorite movie when I was a kid was probably either an old Errol Flynn movie called "Captain Blood," or "Swiss Family Robinson." There was also a stint when I was in kindergarten when I watched "Pollyanna" just about every single day for the entire year... :o)

Thanks for the giveaway! I love tea!

And, to add a few more that I forgot:

    Little Women
    Anne of Green Gables

    Sherlock Holmes (all of them)
    The "Mandy" Series

    Movies:
    Return to Treasure Island
    Anne of Green Gables
    The Jungle Book
    Newsies

I guess I'll stop now. Good question! Thanks again for the giveaway...

  11. My favorite book growing up was the Boxcar Children. I loved the idea of brothers and sisters working together to survive. Also the novelty of living in a train car is still very enticing. Now I want to go to the library and see if it is still available. Oh wait I work in a library:) Fav movie - this will show my age! but we did not have movies like now a days had to wait for them to be on TV! but I would have to say Bambi.

  12. I was all excited to write and share why I like tea...So I am going to anyways! My mom is Korean (adopted as a toddler) but she insists that since she is Asian she has a natural born inclination to like tea. We grew up having tea parties drinking tea out real china cups and tea pots! I am happy to be doing the same with my little girl!
Now to answer your questions...we were raised without a T.V. so my dad would on occasion borrow a T.V. and VCR and rent a few movies. I remember loving the Laurel and Hardy show, Fiddler on the Roof and The sound of Music (still a favorite) but one of my all time favorites from childhood and still is: White Christmas!!! Anne of Green Gables was fun too! As far as books...I loved my mom reading the Carolyn Haywood "Eddie and Betsy" books and the Maude Hart Lovelace " Betsy and Tacey" books (I'm reading them to my kids now!)As an older kid I just read anything the school library in Peru had! (not too big of a selection but I found enough to entertain me when I wasn't out swimming in the lake or playing soccer or riding motor cycles) :)
Oh and I think I was the second person to "like" you on facebook!!! :) :)

  13. My favorite childhood book was Witch of Blackbird Pond. That book made me fall in love with reading.

  14. This might make me a weirdo, but I don't like tea -- except for chai tea lattes from just about anywhere EXCEPT Starbucks. I wasn't going to leave a comment due to this fact, but when I saw Beth's second comment I just had to note that Newsies was one of my favorite childhood movies as well -- along with the Indiana Jones series, whose score I actually composed lyrics for back in the day, hahahahahaha!!! (Beth should remember that, too.)

  15. I loved reading books, and still do, but I think my favorite picture book as a child was "Baby Boat" by Betty Waterton. It is a beautiful watercolor story about a lady who lives in a lighthouse being lonely for babies. I love it so much that I recently bought myself a copy!

  16. Fun! My favorite childhood book was Wind in the Willows. The first few times I "read" it was having my mom read it to me, a chapter at a time before bed. Then I read it myself. I LOVED those forest animals! Now I have my own copy and can't wait to read it to my kids!

  17. My favorite book memories from when I was little are the ones where my whole family would sit together and my dad would read to us. I still love Narnia and the Hobbit.

  18. I'm back because it took me this long to realize that about the only book I re-read as a kid (I used to have a thing against re-reading books, but now I do it frequently) was Watership Down. The adventure, the hint of magic because most likely rabbits couldn't really talk . . . ;) . . . well,I loved Anne of Green Gables, too, and re-read her over and over, but she came later.

  19. Some of my favorites:
Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfield (and the whole "Shoes" series)
Betsy-Tacy series by Maud Hart Lovelace
Beany Malone series by Lenora Mattingly Weber
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

And some picture books I loved to read to my kids when they were little:
    Frog and Toad series
    Sylvester and the Magic Pebble
    The Snowy Day

  20. I "liked" you on Facebook! : )
Can't resist adding a few more:
Pippi Longstocking books and the "Noisy Village" books by Astrid Lindgren
Freddy the Pig series by Walter Brooks (Freddy the Detective, etc.)

  21. Carrie, I've been enjoying reading some of your posts! I love tea, especially African Rooibus tea, cause it reminds me of my visit to Africa. And about your question as far as favorite childhood book or movie? That's easy cause my favorite childhood book is also my favorite movie of all time! Little Women! I've probably ready the book 4 or 5 times, and I love watching the movie every year around Christmas! I still cry every time I see it! Lol!

  22. I have to choose ONE? I was a HUGE Trixie Belden fan. I know, not very cultured, but I loved those books.

  23. Liked you on facebook...

Another fun book I read and re-read was The Littles to the Rescue. :) Great illustrations and fun to imagine them living in our walls. :)

  24. Not many folks have mentioned favorite movies, so I'll add to that list! I only went to a theater 3 times when I was growing up. The 2nd movie I ever saw was when I was in 2nd grade, and it was my favorite: "The Sound of Music"! I very seriously thought about becoming a nun after that...

(In 1st grade I saw Disney's "Yellowstone National Park" and in 5th grade: "True Grit"--the original!) You can probably guess how old I am! :)

  25. Torture, Carrie, pure torture! (Trying to pick "just one" favorite...that's like asking me to pick my favorite kid!) :)

Short answer: Book: Eight Cousins by Alcott, and movie: The Princess Bride

Long answer: Come visit my bookshelves! I've collected every single one of my favorite childhood books..and then some! :)

  26. I absolutely ADORE Charlotte's Web! The movie is also pretty good (but not as good as the book!)

    Thank you for the chance!
