Woe is I: The Grammarphobe's Guide to Better English in Plain English by Patricia T. O'Conner
I know I have friends who think I'm a total nerd for reading this book. However, I don't think you need to have a degree in English to enjoy O'Conner's writing style and sense of humor as she delves into the depths of the English language and the rules that keep us on the grammatical straight and narrow. In the interest of offering an unbiased review, I must go on record as being against the majority of Chapter 9: The Living Dead - Let Bygone Rules Be Gone. I don't agree that some of the rules that she claims should be tossed aside, are truly ready to be buried (i.e., in my opinion, never end a sentence with a preposition is still a good rule). Despite my displeasure with Chapter 9, I can't wait to pick up copies of her other books, Words Fail Me: What Everyone Who Writes Should Know about Writing and You Send Me: Getting It Right When You Write Online.

  1. Sweet! More English language fun to come! I'll have to see if Santa can swing by early to drop at least one of those off...

  2. Will my "to read" list ever be finished? I partially blame you for this, young lady.
