What are YOU reading?

A Season of Gifts by Richard Peck
This book was a birthday gift from my oldest sister this past December. As you may recall, she has excellent taste in books (as I've written about multiple times, including HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE), but this little story didn't capture me in the way that some of her other recommendations have. Part of the problem might have been my expectations, and the fact that I didn't realize that it was a children's book when I started it (ages 10 and up). At 176 pages, it doesn't take long to finish, and once I realized that it was written for kids, I gave it a little more grace and ended up enjoying it - even if it didn't make my list of favorites. The best character, hands down, was the memorable Mrs. Dowdel, who is featured in Peck's other books, A Long Way from Chicago and A Year Down Yonder (both of which are now in my Amazon cart). While it's debatable that A Season of Gifts is worth buying, it is certainly worth borrowing from your local library.

  1. Wow, Carrie...Anne books followed by LOTR books...sounds like something I would do! :)

I'm reading through Trial and Triumph by Richard Hannula before I give it to my kids, and when the house is quiet I get to read snatches of The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis. (Wait, wasn't I reading that last week too? Guess it was a noisy week!)

I'm also searching (and researching) for books to add to our reading list for fifth grade. The challenge is that I need books that fit our fifth grade subjects, a fifth grade maturity level, but a highschool reading level...can I pick your brain? :)

  2. Curious what you think about TDL. At what point I wondering what have I got myself into?! ;)

  3. Jamie - I'll have to think about that and get back to you when I have a little more time. FishMama (Jessica) would probably be a good one to ask as well, since she has been a homeschooling book-lover for quite some time now. :-)

Jessica - Let's just say that it's not what I was expecting. At all. I'm waiting to see if it improves before giving a full-blown opinion. ;-)

  4. Good evening Carrie. I found your blog on the FB link. Thank you for the invitation. Your site looks great, very impressive.

I live with my Kindle Fire tied to my wrist and I'm always interested in what others are reading. I can't wait to browse thru your blog, if I can tear myself away from Kindle.
